The Taipei Astronomical Museum (TAM) is a museum that’ll give you a means to learn about space and check out Taipei’s observatory. It’s a fantastic way to spend an hour or 2 with your family.
What to Do There
There’s an IMAX Theater built within a spherical building that’ll show you the constellations in addition to playing sounds, light, and other instruments to feel like you’re in the zone. It’s a great way to make you feel like you’re stargazing.
Tickets for the IMAX theater are NT$100 for adults and NT$50 for children.
Here’s a floor guide to the TAM:
- 1st floor: Introduces technologies, Earth (e.g., history of Earth), & ancient astronomy.
- 2nd floor: Learn about the moon, constellations, stars, & tides.
- 3rd floor: Introduces galaxies, has telescopes, & has other exhibits.
- Top floor: 2 observatories & radio telescope.
The first observatory has a high-resolution telescope that’s only available to researchers and teachers. The second dome has a telescope that’s open to the public. Sometimes the TAM will keep this observatory open for later if there are rare phenomena happening.
It doesn’t cost a penny to enter the observatory.
Then there’s a 3D theater that’ll immerse you into whatever films they’re showing. Tickets cost NT$100 per adult and NT$50 per child.
You’ll also often find temporary exhibitions that’ll have varying costs to participate or enter. See what’s going on around the top floor when visiting.
