Is the Songshan Cultural & Creative Park Worth Visiting?

I've lived in Taiwan for over 5 years and love discovering all it has to offer. I made this blog to share Taiwan living and travel resources I wish I'd had.

This guide will help you decide if Songshan Cultural and Creative Park is worth visiting. Read on to learn more.

My wife and I often visit when we’re in the area, and the weather’s nice. Based on my experience, I’ll help you determine if you should visit too.

Is It Worth Visiting?

Songshan Cultural and Creative Park is worth visiting if you’re seeking a low-energy, relaxing spot near other tourist attractions.

I’m not too interested in the tobacco factory’s history. But it’s a great place to explore, especially on rainy days, because of the covered spaces.

Still unsure if you want to visit?

Let’s see how to get there.

How to Get to the Songshan Cultural & Creative Park

1. Taipei MRT

The easiest way is to take the Blue Line to Taipei City Hall Station and leave from Exit 2.

Walk for 10 to 15 minutes, then turn right onto Lane 553, Section 4, Zhongxiao East Road.

Or:

Take the MRT to the Sun Yat-Sen memorial Hall Station, then leave from exit 5.

Follow the signs to Songshan Cultural and Creative Park from there and walk from 7 to 10 minutes.

2. By driving

The Taipei New Horizon Building has underground parking. You can enter from Yanchang Road.

If you’re curious about renting a car in Taiwan, here’s a guide.

But I’d recommend taking a taxi or booking an Uber, since driving in Taipei can be stressful.

3. Bus

You can take one of the following buses to reach the park:

StopBusShuttle Bus Routes
Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall Stop204, 254, 266, 266, 282, & 288NA
Zhongxiao East Road212, 232, 240, 263, 270, 299, 919, 1800, 1815, & 5500266 & 288
Buses that go to the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park.

4. YouBike

Rent a YouBike, Taiwan’s bike rental service. It’s an affordable way to ride through the city.

Here’s where you’ll find YouBike rental docks:

Let’s dive into what there is to do.

What to See

Explore the remains of the Matsuyama Tobacco Plant of the Monopoly Bureau of the Taiwan Governor’s Office in the following buildings:

  • Warehouses 1 – 5: Workers made and packaged cigarettes here.
  • Tobacco factory
  • Machine repair plant: Machine repairs and maintenance.
  • Boiler room: Provided power for the factory.
  • Nursery room: Part of the factory’s industrial village.
  • Ecology pond: Once used for fire safety, now a wildlife observation spot.
  • Office building
  • Inspection room: Where workers clocked in and out.
  • Taiwan Design museum: Once housed factory supervisors.

Aside from nature, the park often hosts exhibitions and local artists. Browse the booths for hand-made souvenirs to bring home.

These souvenirs often cost a lot, though.

On hot days, I recommend grabbing ice cream from Family Mart.

It’s some of the best ice cream in Taiwan — flavorful but not overly sweet. The flavors change often, so I can’t recommend a specific one.

If you need a break from the heat, visit the huge Eslite bookstore.

There’s also a nice hotel nearby that’s very convenient.

It’s close to many attractions, like the park and Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall.

As of September 2024, Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall is closed for renovations. If it’s open when you visit, I recommend checking it out.

Otherwise…

Here’s what I’d do:

  • Visit Taipei 101: Observatory, mall, food court, and 101st floor
  • Head to the Songshan Cultural & Creative Park
  • Eat dinner at Xinyi Breeze and walk off the calories
  • Head to a bar around Xinyi: Only if you want to take part in Taipei’s nightlife

I included the Creative Park in my 3-day Taipei itinerary. Check it out for inspiration.

It’s a cool area, but nothing too special.
